Word meaning in a sentence

Hello,

I'm wondering the meaning of 'side by side' in the sentence below.

Gauguin is staying with him, painting side by side.

Does the expression 'side by side' mean 'next to each othe'r or' together'?

I think the second is right here.

I'm looking forward to your answer.
