Hello, I'd be very happy if someone could explain the difference between a.) stiffling and b.) oppressive.

based on two examples from books, the words look as a synonym for me.

both example sentence are part of the book diary of Anne Frank.
example for stifling: the atmosphere is stifling, sluggish, leaden
example for oppressive: Outside, you don't hear a single bird, and a deathly, oppressive silence hangs over the house
