Can one say "remember word for word" to mean remembering exactly how every words were put together and in the exact order? Does "translation word for word" mean translation with the meaning of every word without figurative sense? I don't think you can use "word for word" of a translation at all. For one thing, pretty often one language doesn't even have that word. For another, many languages can pile words together into one big word that cannot exist in a language like English.
