What word could be used if the process is less mechanical, like using chemicals or hot water to make it come off?

Soak off would be more appropriate for water and not for chemicals, right? In the dictionary I read some other words, unstick, detach, unfix. Would one of these be appropriate?

The closest I can come is "lift", but it needs a little help from the sentence. "He lifted the sticker off his bumper by soaking it in acetone." "He lifted the sticker off his bumper" does not get you there.
