Word error

Greetings and salutations,

Word is angry again. For now I have managed to hold him off, but I do not know how long I will be able to hold out.

Anyway, it seems to have a problem with the following sentence, yet I have no idea why. Is it wrong or am I overlooking something?

However, for reasons beyond comprehension, the situation suddenly debauched into a tickling contest.

The use of "debauched" seems wrong. Perhaps you are thinking of "degenerated"?

Thank you for replying. Yes, I thought that debouched could be interchanged with degenerated in this sentence. Could you please explain why it is not?

As far as I know, one thing cannot "debauch into" another. The verb just isn't used like that.

That was a typo, but I did not know that both excited.Thank you for pointing that out.

I wanted to convey that a casual conversation suddenly turned into a tickling contest. I used the verb to debauch because I thought that using it slightly out of context would highlight the sudden transition. I actually thought that it was a common expression, but I guess I was wrong.
