word 'disguise'

Hi,

I am still not sure meaning of the word ' disguise'. For example, in the following example

"A successful horse was disguised by changing its colour."

does it mean the horse deceived people by changing its colour?

And in another example,

"The fictional Sherlock Holmes often disguised himself as somebody else to avoid being recognized"

does it mean he deceived people by changing his appearance?

Thanks in advance.

In the first case, the horse did not change its own appearance. People changed its colour (with dye?) to deceive others.
