What is the difference the use of operate and ate operating in sentences similar to the below?

They 'operate' a huge chain of hair products.
They 'are operating' a huge chain of hair products.

Are they both same in meaning in this case and can the simple present and present continuous convey the same information and be interchangeable in certain cases?
