Word definition

I'm trying to remember an adjective that describes something which is only known to a certain group of people or professionals? Can anyone help?

Thanks for replying but I don't think I've asked the question clearly, partly due to my lack vocabulary. It's actually a word I'm looking for. For example, " I'm sorry but I don't expect you to understand as this is ........."  - Something that is only understood by a select few. One could say language only used by doctors or scientific colloquialism. 

I hope I'm making sense.
