Briefly explain why the sequence *I put the book is ungrammatical, and state what clause element could be added to make it into a grammatical sentence.
*I put the book is ungrammatical, because 'put' requires a preposition e.g. back, on, in etc. Therefore, a prepositional phrase could be added to make this sentence a grammatical sentence.
