Word choice: singular or plural

Hi teachers,

Which is correct in the following sentence, were or was?

The safety of chronic intake of high amounts of tocopherol have also been assessed and "were or was" reported to be well tolerated.

As written by you, the subject of the second part is 'safety', but it needs to be some reference to the drug. You don't mean that safety is well tolerated.

Say eg The safety of chronic intake of high amounts of tocopherol has also been assessed and this intake was reported to be well tolerated.
