I have made up the examples below.
(1) My friend asked me, "Did your uncle graduate from high school in 1965?"
I replied, "No. He graduated before/earlier than that."
(2) My cousin asked me, "You and Jack used to work together at ABC Store. Did he quit before/earlier than you?"
I am not sure which one is correct: "before" or "earlier than"? Please help me. Thank you very much.
I would expect someone to say "before", but "earlier than" is also correct and would not strike me as unusual. Choose whichever one you like better. CJ
