Word Choice

Which is correct/clearer:

The payment was sent by regular mail to the customer instead of us.
or
The payment was sent by regular mail to the customer instead of to us.

The second sentence is clearer, but only marginally so. I would argue that the first sentence, the one missing the preposition to , could possibly allow for a second reading or interpretation although it would be a bit of a stretch. If you wish to be crystal clear -- and it seems that you do -- then I would go for the second sentence.
