I would guess that using this refers to the part of the battle you are talking about right now, whilst using that might be referring to the part of the battle that happened in the past...

- This would give an idea of the battle being somehow "closer", and that would give an idea of it being "further" away.
- I would guess that, if you're really concerned about that wording, think about how "close" to the battle you want the reader to feel.
