Word choice

Hi,

I'm racking my brain trying to come up with the right word that would fit the following context:

"C" represents the prototype/benchmark value of a variable and is used to detect any changes in the variable over time by way of comparing the variable and the prototype/benchmark value.

I think that "prototype" or "benchmark" will do, but not sure.

Could you clear my doubts and tell me what word(s) a native speaker would use in this context.

Thanks !

Well, not 'prototype'. 'Benchmark' sounds OK; also 'control', 'standard', 'reference'?

You might also want to consider "baseline."
