Hi,
In this sentence am I right that the word "fiercely" is both a preposition and an adverb?
"It was a fiercely competitive game."
It's an adverb because it's describing the verb "was".
It's also a preposition because it shows the relationship between "it" and the "game".
Thanks
It's just an adverb.

No, that is incorrect. It describes the adjective "competitive" as an adverb of quality or degree. Adverbs can be removed from a sentence without changing the grammatical structure. They are adjuncts.
"It was a fiercely competitive game."
"It was a competitive game."

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it is nearly impossible to "describe the verb 'was'", or any form of be.
