Word "alien"

Hi,

I was wondering why we use the word "alien" for "extraterrestrial", since it can be mixed, for instance,

with "I feel like an alien in this town" (not meaning "extraterrestrial", but just like an alien, that's it).

Like, also, the song of Sting (an English man in New York): he did not mean extraterrestrial in his song.

Thank you for that.

Hello, tremere — and welcome to English Forums. Many, many English words have more than one meaning, and I'm sure that must be true of your own language also. 'Alien' comes from Latin alienus , which means 'strange' or 'foreign', and that idea can be applied to both terrestrials and extraterrestrials.
