Trying to reach your husband, you accidentally listened to a conversation about planning a murder. After a lot of confusion and frustration, you later realized that you are going to be killed!
“Sorry, Wrong Number” is an exciting, fast-paced adventure through the phone. It is full of extreme stress, pain and agony. The play begins when Mrs. Elbert Stevenson was trying to call her husband, who was working late that evening. After dialing for forty-five minutes, Mrs. Stevenson phones the operator to reach her husband’s office. The operator accidentally connects the wrong call. Mrs. Stevenson listened to a murder being planned by a man named George and his friend. Soon, her call was cut off and she dials the operator, in hopes that she can trace the horrible call and stop the murder. The operator attempted to trace the call but was unsuccessful.
There was a lot of confusion until the chief operator spoke with Mrs. Stevenson. The call must be traced through an authority, so therefore, Mrs. Stevenson phoned the police. But the police was ignorant and stubborn. The sergeant thinks that the call Mrs. Stevenson overheard was phony and that the murder might be anywhere in the world. Soon, Mrs. Stevenson was receiving calls with no one answering. This event made her nervous and she began to feel anxious and afraid.
Later, she receives a message from her husband that he will be going elsewhere for work and that he will be back in the morning. This message made Mrs. Stevenson even more upset until she decided to get a trained nurse to take care of her for the evening. Unfortunately, the nurse registry had a limited number of nurses so having a nurse stay over would not be possible without a doctor’s prescription. After this call, Mrs. Stevenson soon realized that she is in trouble and that there was someone in her house. She tries to talk to the operator but then, there was a train passing by, and a silent scream, covered by the noise outside. Then, the operator asked for the number. George picks up the phone and said, “Sorry, wrong number.”
According to my point of view, I think that this script had a lot of electrifying, shocking and ironic events. First of all, this story had a weak and terrified character. Mrs. Stevenson is lonely and scared in the story. As each event makes her more petrified, the level of thrill and tension increases. Having a tired and helpless woman in a story go though many exciting events makes the readers think that something tremendous is going to happen in the end.
Secondly, from listening to this play, I think that the emotions and the mood in the story are quite exhilarating and expressive. Mrs. Stevenson’s voice was so upset that you can picture her at a telephone, yelling and screaming her head off at the operator. Her reactions to each event can convince readers and listeners that what was going on was truly horrible.
Lastly, I think that this story had some irony in it. It was pretty ironic when Mrs. Stevenson heard of a murder and that she was going to be murder the same evening. It was also ironic when none of other characters in the story believed or took much notice in what she had overheard. I think that everyone thought that she was doing prank calls and that everything she had said was all false. Mrs. Stevenson may be convincing to the readers but she sure was not impressive to the other characters.
In conclusion, I think that this story was amazing and that this play deserves an A+. I think that the parts for each actor/actress were fabulous and were carefully thought-out. The plots of this story were unpredictable, which made each event unexpected and surprising. I would recommend this script to students who enjoy murder, mystery, and detective and irony. THX=)
