Wont to do

Hi,

Is it wont to or wont to do. For instance: A punished B, as he was wont to (do).

When is 'do' necessary and when it is not?

Thanks,

In the last sentence, I am wondering whether 'to' is okay instead of 'to do.'

So that would leave :-

They spent much of the time reminiscing about the war, as old soldiers are wont to.

Logically that makes sense to me, but I really want to put "do" on the end. This may be just my reluctance to end the sentence with "to".

I have no problem ending a sentence with "to" but I still want to put "to do" with "wont."

I agree with GG.
If "do" fits, put it in. The phrase "wont to + verb" sounds to me a bit old-fashioned. I seldom hear it in speech.

In the American Corpus, there is only one citation of "wont to" without being folloowed by an infinitive verb form. "Do" is the most common verb following "to", but others are also used.
