wondered vs asked

Dear teachers,

talking about indirect speech: is it possible to use the word 'wonder' in the context given below?

Original sentence:

"Can I join you (= Harry and Sally), please?"

Reported to a third party:

I wondered whether I could join them.

For me, "to wonder" is similar to "to ask myself", but in the given sentence I don't ask myself but Harry and Sally. So, wouldn't it be better to use "asked" here?
