Won the first prize

Can I say,

He won the first prize in the race.

Top answer

Hi VT If you say "He won first prize in the race", I would understand that to mean that he won the race and therefore received the top prize. If you say "He won the first prize in the race", that sounds a bit like he won a prize before anyone else did. In other words, there may have been several or many prizes of equal value to be won during the race.
