Won

Hello,

1. He won first prize.

I wonder whether we can use 'the' in the above sentence.

2. He won the first prize.

Could anyone suggest the differences between the two?

Hello,

I would like to conclude it like this :

If there are the prizes like 'first' , 'second' or 'third' e.t.c and someone get any of these prizes,
We can say it 'He won first prize.'

If there is no such category of prizes and someone get any prize, we say 'He won the first prize'.

Am I right?

Thanks.
