Domestic violence is one of the major problems which women in poor households, especially in developing and under-developed countries endure. Lack of economic independence of the women is the major cause for this problem. The problem gets aggravated when men in these households are given to drinking. A community can remove domestic violence if it provides equal opportunities to girls as boys in education. If women are educationally empowered, they can become economically independent by finding themselves well paying jobs.
Women empowerment has a significant role in the overall well being of the family. When women enjoy equal rights as men in the decision making in the family, it not only paves way for more balanced decisions—women can have a totally different approach to the situation—but also promotes democratic values among the family members. When men and women, as equal partners, share the responsibilities of nurturing of children, taking care of the elderly, and managing income, saving and expenses the chores not seem stressful to either of them. Further, this enables them appreciate each other’s contribution to the family.
When women are provided equal and adequate opportunities in politics, it results in important benefits to the community and the nation at large. If some communities do not give women equal opportunities as men in politics it is primarily because they are fundamentally patriarchal. Discrimination based on gender is common in these communities. Global statistics show that owing to cultural and social norms, women are underrepresented as leaders, elected officials and voters. Research from different parts of the world suggest that only when there is a considerable number of women parliamentarians, can we expect a stronger attention to women issues, increased impetus in the fight against gender inequalities, and a true democracy.
In conclusion, it is only when women are given equal opportunities as men in education and politics, we can aspire for a comprehensive, unbiased and sustainable development. At a time when the world is embracing more and more of science and its applications in various forms, it is only but ironical that men discriminate women on the basis of gender, age-old myths and unreasonable beliefs and customs.
