Woken (up)

Michael, having just woken, gets out of bed.

Is it necessary to add up after woken?

Top answer

It is correct English with or without "up". All other things being equal, "woken up" is a bit more informal or conversational than plain "woken". However, overall this sentence seems more of a narrative sentence than a conversational one.
