Wog

Couldn't find the original thread, but did my homework on 'Wog'.

Of course it's short for 'golliwog', he remembered, slapping his forehead loudly and groaning. A golliwog is/was a doll "fashioned in grotesque caricature of a Black male."
As for it's British origins, I apologise: "After Golliwog, a character in books by Florence Upton (died 1922), American illustrator."

However Wog is also recorded as a British colonial term meaning Worthy Oriental Gentleman. Might as well get our racial slurs correct...

Not necessarily Oriental. I grew up in the UK and frequently heard the expression "The wogs begin in Calais."
