Witnessed

Context: Talking to my friend about John's promotion and going to a high level in his career.

I congratulated John yesterday, who has got a new position in his company. I witnessed that he has grown well in his career.

Please check them.

Can we say the way "going to a high level in his career." or "reaching new heights in his career."?

I am not sure it "has grown well in his career."
