Without so much as/as much as

Hi,

I know that ‘without so much as’ is the correct form, but I actually came across ‘without as much as’ in the Guardian. Is it also correct or did the author of the article make a mistake?

My opinion is that both versions are said and considered acceptable. But I prefer ‘without so much as'. Clive

In formal writing, I try to use "so" in negative senses, but there is no "rule" about it that I've heard of.
