Without

Can one say:
1-I didn't recognize him without my glasses.
instead of:
1a-I didn't recognize him because I did not have my glasses on.

Can one say:
2-I did not enter the house without my keys.
instead of:
2a-I did not enter the house because I did not have my keys.

I think "1" works with the given meaning but "2" does not mean the same as "2a".
