Within the five-kilometer limit

1. Canada charges that French and Russian fishing ships violated its waters by fishing within the two-hundred-mile limit it claims along its Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

2. Obama said that Turkish army tanks have violated some of the lands of Iraq within the five-kilometer limit.

Source: self-made

Hi,
Sentence #2 is self-made. But why can't the red part work when the blue part can? They have the same construction.

So, what's wrong with the red part in my self-made sentence in #2?

For example, suppose that some of the army tanks of the Turkey have occupied 5 kilometers of Iraq's lands in north of Iraq.

Thank you.

The 200-mile limit refers to an area that is outside Canada's border but over which Canada claims certain legal rights.

When you say "a five-kilometer limit", are you referring to an area that is outside Iraq's border but over which Iraq claims certain legal rights?

By "five-kilometer limit" I mean the tanks of Turkey have occupied 5 kilometers of Iraq's territories (from the border).

Then if you use the term 'five-kilometer limit', I wouldn't understand your meaning. I would expect it to be like Canada's 200-mile limit, which I described in my previous post.

You should reword, eg Turkish tanks have occupied a strip of land 5 kilometers inside Iraq.

Thank you. What bout these two sentences:

1. Turkey's tanks have violated the territories of Iraq for five kilometers.
2. Turkey's tanks have violated the lands of Iraq for five kilometers.

I wouldn't say those are wrong, but they sound clumsy to me.
I suggest this. It sounds better to me.
3. Turkey's tanks have violated five kilometers of Iraq's territory.

Thank you very much.
Can I use "lands" instead of "territories" in your example?
0
If you want to. But I almost always see 'territory' in such a context.

Thank you. Excuse me, can "kilometers" also work for the seas?

For example: Russia's boats have violated five kilometers of Iran's sea (Caspian Sea).
0
How far out into the sea does Iran claim to have a legal right to?
