within of ?

"In test flight, it came within 8 mph of going supersonic."
Does this sentence above express that the airplane is 8 mph below supersonic?
If so, should I say:

I am within 2 years of becoming an adult?
The runner came within 2 seconds of winning the game?
It happened within 2 minutes of 12 o' clock?
He died within 2 days of gaining independence?

Does this structure only apply to simple tense?

Or am I totally wrong...?

Sorry for all my annoying questions Emotion: sad And your help is much appreciated!
