I looked up the source of this quote and read the text that precedes this. It's chiefly about the use of lighting in photography. The 'notions' are that reality is seen on a ground of white and that light comes from above. It's unclear exactly how these notions advantage white people, but the author claims he will get into further detail in another chapter later in the book.

As for 'between and within them', I can find absolutely no coherent meaning in the phrase. I am certain, however, that it has nothing to do with contrasts between whites and non-whites because non-whites are not mentioned in this section of the text. The word 'them' refers to white people.

I have concluded that the phrase is meaningless.
