within

Language is central to human experience and if we are to understand the process by which men communicate with one another, we must look closely at the human capacity for language and at the particular qualities of language which enable it to play so powerful a role within us and between us.

About the 'within', does it imply something psychological, inside our mind, or something physical, inside the group 'us'?
