With Whom

Which is correct: 1. "He had a close group of friends with whom he associated with after school." Or:

2. "He had a close group of friends with whom he associated after school."

I believe that number two is correct, for, in number 1, the "with" placed after "associated" is redundant. If the sentence read thus: "He had a close group of friends who he associated with after school." The "with" is obviously necessary.

Thanks!
