With their hands “frozen/freezing”

Hello, everyone,

They climbed up the mountain with their hands _____ .
a) frozen, b) freezing

While the answer is a) on my book, I think both could be the answer for the absolute construction, because the verb ‘freeze’ can act both transitively and intransitively depending on the context.

Will appreciate if you advise which is the correct one.

Grammatically, both are correct.

From the point of view of meaning and of what's more natural, I'd say b). I doubt their hands would be literally frozen as they were climbing the mountain because they need their hands to climb the mountain. Besides, when it gets really cold, I'm more likely to say "My hands are fre
