Grammar

with the use/employing

Is it ok for native speaker's ear:
1) the experiments were carried out with the use of the recoil separator.
or is it better to say:
The work was performed employing the recoil separator.

2) A series of experiments conducted in 2010 was aimed at the study of the properties of elements.
or
A series of experiments conducted in 2010 aimed to study the properties of elements.

Do you have better options?

snuppelina 1) the experiments were carried out with the use of the recoil separator. The sentence is grammatical but it raises questions as to what it really means without additional context. What is the goal of the experiment with the recoil separator ?

grammarfreak,
Thanks. Maybe it's better to say the experiments were carried out using the recoil separator at the *** laboratory in collaboration with the laboratories of the YYY UNiversity and the *** University.

Experiments require time, effort and resources. Scientists don't conduct experiments for fun. If the recoil separator was used in the experiment, what is the ultimate goal or expectation ? That is the part which is missing to make the statement complete. As it stands, ".....experiments were carried out using the recoil separator ...." is not wrong bu

The meaning of the sentence is that the recoil separator was used in these experiments. I do not mean to include the ultimate goal of experiments in this sentence. Experiments can be conducted using various separators; this one is conducted using the recoil reparator. So the meaning of the whole sentence should be like "experiments were conducted using/with the use of the recoil separator at the Z
