With or beside

My sister is sat with my mum in the bus.

Is the use of with correct in the sentence, please?

I think it should be beside.

Thanks.

"with" and "beside" are both OK in this sentence. "with" is understood to mean about the same as "beside", perhaps with a bit more leeway. "is sat" is not really proper standard English.

  • "with" and "beside" are both OK in this sentence.

  • "is sat" is not really proper standard English.
  • Colloquially this usage is fairly common, at least here in England, and I think sometimes I might use it myself in speech, but it doesn't look great written down.
  • "is sitting" is "proper".
