I am not a linguist, but my guess is that it means the basic form of a noun in sthe singular, and you have to do something to it (like add an 's') to change it to plural. So, a "marked" feature of a word is something that has to be indicated by a change from the most basic form of the word. )

I am not a linguist, but my guess is that it means the basic form of a noun in sthe singular, and you have to do something to it (like add an 's') to change it to plural. So, a "marked" feature of a word is something that has to be indicated by a change from the most basic form of the word. (This is just a guess!)
