with and without "for"

"Would you like for me to turn off the TV?" vs. "Would you like me to turn off the TV?"

I know in meaning they mean the same, but why is one with "for" and the other without if they mean the same? Thanks in advance for you reply.

My feeling is . . . like for me to. . . is substandard, although it is quite commonly said.
