With All Due Respect - Definition?

I use "with all due respect" all the time. I thought I was showing respect. My spouse says it is an insult. If that is true then I have insulted a lot of people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help please.

Anonymous My spouse says it is an insult. Not exactly an insult—since it does express respect—but it is a phrase we use when we are upset and irritated and wish to argue against someone else's opinion. So it often occurs when two people are arguing and not feeling pleasant toward each other.
