For me, "in", it's a preposition which means we wash clothes by putting them in a washing machine and clean it.

Unless one still lives in the dark ages, everyone in the 21st century who has a flushing toilet knows when we have a load of laundry to do, we put it in a (washing) machine, and not a dish washing machine. So a machine when referred to clothes, it is understood what kind of machine it is.

BTW, you don't need to say 'the clothes'.
