wished + would

The use of "would" in past tense in general always confused me but when joined with "wish" I'm completely puzzled as to how to phrase the sentence.

In my story, I have this: "He wished it wouldn't have to be him." Is it correct? What I mean to convey is that the character's wish/feeling persists to the moment I'm describing in the story.

He wishes it hadn't had to be him is what you want to express. Using 'wished/would' is a very common error, probably more among native speakers than learners.
