If something is happening, do I say?

I wish I know what is happening.

I wish I knew what is happening.

The object of the verb, know: "what is happening" is not hypothetical, why backshifted?!

MM did not say that they both have the same meaning. They do have different meanings as you explained earlier.

I wish I knew what was happening now: same meaning, but with "was" to respect the sequence after "knew".

In the past, I wish I had known what was happening

After wish we go back one tense into the past because it's subjunctive.
