The diagram shows the working of a hydroelectric power station in generating electricity.

First of all, water in the high-level reservoir flows into the intake under the dam. In the day time, the dam will be opened for the flow of water to generate electricity. Following that, the reversible turbines which operate the generator in the day time allow generated electricity go through the power lines to national grid.

In the night time, the water from the low-level reservoir is pumped into the high-level reservoir b reversible turbines.

To conclude, the function of the hydroelectric power station is differ by the day time and the night time. At day, the station consumes energy to generate electricity and at night, it uses water from low-level reservoir to create and store the enery for the next day.
