Wipe dust

Hello Teachers. I say to my son this:

"From now on part of your chores is to wipe dust off the bookshelves."

Is this correct? I was thinking if I should or not put "the" before "dust".

My teacher explained to me that without the article, it is "some/any dust that it on the bookshelves at any given point in time".
With the article it means "all the dust that's on the bookshelves" at any given point in time.

I just wanted to confirm with you Teachers this explanation. Thanks you.

I say this to my son this : From now on one part of your chores is to wipe (the) dust off the bookshelves. I prefer the article, but it is not required. Your teacher's explanation is a good one.
