Winter: First or last month?

I've been watching The Last Samurai and noticed the narration talking about Winter 1877 before Spring 1877. In my native language, we say Winter 1876 or Winter 1876-1877. Our four seasons come in this order: Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall, Winter.

Is it correct in English, as long as you're on the northern hemisphere, to refer to January-February 1877 as Winter 1877?
