Winston Churchill

I cannot understand the meaning of Churchill’s words. I would be grateful if anyone could explain it to me.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so little. Winston Churchill.

I remember this from my history class. The Germans were kept from invading Britain because of a handful of very brave British pilots (along with pilots from other nationalities). The British (So many) owed their national survival (so much) to a small group of people (so few, not "so little").
