Dear All,
could you please, help me to understand the meaning of the word "windswept" in this context:
"I don't think words can do justice to the charm and character and windswept beauty of the place". The mentioned place is in England, North Yorkshire. Could it be understood as wild or severe beauty? Thank you very much!
"Wild or severe beauty" is too general an interpretation for a description as specific as windswept, which means swept as if by wind. Windswept describes only those characteristics of a scene or landscape which can be or could have been swept, which brings to my mind objects that can be swept up or swept away by wind like dust or debris, or swept into a particular orientation or chaos by the direction or lack of direction of the wind, such as leaves on tree branches or tall grasses in a field.
