I agree with you. "would you be able to answer" or "can you answer" are both more natural to my AmEng ear.

Thank you for your comment. If I say "Would you be able to answer this question?", what does that mean? Does it mean "Would you answer this question if possible ( or if you like)?" One of my friends said, "Will you be able to answer this question by Monday? is OK". How about this? Thank you very much.
