Will vs be going to

I have some questions about expressing 'future'.

Look at the folloing examples.

ex1) What will you do?

What are you going to do?

ex2)What will you do the summer?

What are you going to do the summer?

I don't know what is different between 'will' and ' be going to'.

Which one is more common?

Hi, The simplest way to begin teaching the difference is to tell students to use 'be going to' when they are talking about a PLAN, and in other cases to use 'will'. It's not really quite as simple as that, but that's a good start. Clive

They are both common, and used almost interchangeably.
Will sounds a bit more formal.

2)What will you do this summer?
What are you going to do this summer?
