The Gift of a Mother
A memorable Jewish Proverb states: God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. When Casey was born she did not yet know that the woman God blessed her with was a unique woman. A woman who would become the type of mother Casey would strive to mirror when she had a child. This type of woman would be strong-willed, motivating, and have a never ending amount of support for her child. Any mother that holds these traits should truly be admired.

Mara was faced with a tough road ahead of her by being a single mother. She knew that she would spend her years giving up her needs for her child’s needs; working hard to provide Casey with the life she felt she deserved. One day Casey asked Mara if she could try out for the city basketball league. Mara knew this would be a financial struggle, but part of being a strong-willed mother meant making sure her child never knew her struggles. Mara worked overtime at her job to come up with the money to pay for Casey to play the sport and made sure she was present at every game to cheer her on. This would be the first time Casey understood the selflessness her mother possessed.

When Mara decided to go back to college to earn her degree, she knew that it was an opportunity to show Casey that no dream or goal was unattainable. As long as you put your heart and soul into the work you did you would always succeed. Casey watched her mother spend countless hours at the dining room table studying and never once heard her complain about the lack of sleep she was getting. Casey knew her mother was motivated to better their lives, no matter what obstacles they faced. So when Casey decided to further her education, she knew the one person who would be there motivating her would be her mother.

A mother’s unconditional love is unknown until the child becomes a parent. Mara loved Casey regardless of her faults and never turned her back when Casey would rebel against her wishes. She knew she had instilled a foundation of honesty and hard work in her child, so she never underestimated these morals in Casey. Mara would support Casey through some of her proudest moments, including enlisting in the military. Mara stood proud watching her child accomplish something so admirable. She knew Casey admired her, but standing there watching her child graduate from boot camp made her realize she admired her daughter as well.

It would not be until Casey became a mother herself, that she would truly understand the precious gift God gave her. Casey could only hope she would be half the mother hers was. She would be determined to make sure her son knew that his mother was strong-willed, motivating, and had a never ending amount of support for him. The three traits she, to this day, still admires in her mother.
