Here is my essay for my Michigan State University application.
Describe the environment you come from - for example, your family, community, or school - and how this environment has affected or influenced your plans for the future in 400 words or less.
Since I was born and raised in a Christian home, family and God have always been the center of my universe. With a rather large family of five children, we were hardly ever apart. Although being together non-stop did seem a bit overwhelming at times, it caused not only relationships, but friendships with both my parents and siblings to flourish. This close-knit relationship with my family has helped me to appreciate what I have in life, and is something I am truly grateful for.
With God being the center of my family, I have been active in many different church activities, such as music, ever since I was a child. In discovering the gift of singing at a very young age, church helped me to develop this new found talent. I began singing in children’s choirs and plays, and progressively increased to the point where I was given leadership roles in both youth and adult worship teams. If not for church giving me the opportunity to develop my talent, I would not have the passion for singing that I do now, which continues to be a huge part of my life.
Another important aspect of my life is my education. Having been home schooled my entire life has not always been the easiest. While home schooling does have its advantages of sleeping in and studying at one’s own pace, it requires a great deal of self-discipline. You don’t have the luxury of people standing in front of you, teaching you different subjects face to face. You have to make yourself sit down, read the material, make sure you comprehend what you have read, and do the work associated. In doing so, I came to the realization that my mother, who is also my teacher, could not possibly make me want to learn. Rather, I have to be the one with the desire to learn and grow from my education if I want to succeed in life. Therefore, despite the fact that I didn’t always like being home schooled, it has proved to be a huge learning experience for me. One that I am privileged to apply to all my future studies.
All of these experiences have had a profound affect on my life. They have helped me to grow and to learn, and have culminated into the person that I am proud to say that I am today.
